Text Box: Text Box: Kid Power!

If you are having difficulties getting your children to eat healthy foods, give them some power by letting them make decisions on what they want to eat.

I have found that if children are allowed to be a part of the decision making as well as the food preparation, they are more likely to try new foods and maybe even like them!

Helpful Hints:

Start your children at an early age giving them a variety of foods...even if you don’t care for them yourself.

Try using an ingredient in different recipes. One may not work, but another could become a family favorite.

Take your child to the grocery store with you; each week try a new fruit or vegetable. My daughter and I still do this. In the winter, we try different types of winter squash and in the summer, we try all types of fruits. It’s hit or miss, but when it’s a hit….oh boy!!

Sit down with your child and a good cookbook—decide on a new dish to try. Let him/her help you prepare the recipe. Even for younger children, there is always some task they can do.

Make a sandwich train, cantaloupe canoe or other recognizable dish. Not only will your child get a kick out of what you put together, it will add an element of fun and tempt them to try something new.

Good luck! I hope you are pleasantly surprised.
