Mrs. Murphy's Kitchen
Cooking Classes for Kids

About the Class Sessions
Welcome to Mrs. Murphy's Kitchen! I am very excited to have the opportunity to offer my love of cooking to children, who I hope will get as much pleasure out of it as I do! All classes are hands on, giving children the opportunity to touch and feel different types of food, textures, etc. Each child will be motivated to experiment and to find his/her creative side in preparing food as well as displaying food in an appealing manner.

Classes are limited to four to six children per class to ensure that each child will have his/her needs met in an environment that is fun and appealing as well as structured and controlled. As classes are set up into age groups, each class is developmentally appropriate.  For example, a 4-year-old will not be using the stove, oven, or any utensil that could be potentially harmful.

All classes are hands on and will include instructions, recipes and ingredients, as well as the wonderful dishes we prepare.

Schedule of monthly classes:

~ Time: 3:30 to 5:00 ~ 1st Wednesday  ~ Ages 8 to 10 (2 spaces available) $25.00/class

~ Time: 3:30 to 4:30 ~ 2nd Wednesday  ~ Ages 6 to 8 (2 spaces available) $20.00/class

~ Time: 4:00 to 5:00 ~ 3rd Wednesday  ~ Ages 5 to 7 (2 spaces available) $20.00/class

~ Time: 3:30 to 4:30 ~ 4th Wednesday  ~ Ages 3 to 5 (New class - open) $20.00/class

I take into consideration the age and skill level of each child when determining which group would be best for him or her.

If you would like to set up a class for your own group of children and the times above do not fit your needs, please call Sue Murphy to schedule a class time that will work into your schedule.

Some of the concepts we cover are:
  • How to read a recipe
  • How to use and read measuring cups and spoons
  • Definitions of blanching, boiling, and simmering
  • How to effectively present the food being prepared
  • What is this utensil?

How are we learning math during a cooking class?
Within each of the classes I also introduce how math plays a major role in cooking. Here are two examples:
  • The younger kids conduct an experiment with measuring cups and water. We fill the 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 measuring cups with water and count how many times we have to fill each cup to equal 1 cup. I also give them a hint on how to figure this out easily.

  • For older kids, I give spur of the moment verbal quizzes on measurements.

What is this utensil?
  • In this game, I show the kids a variety of kitchen utensils and appliances and ask them to tell me what they are and what they are used for. We all have fun with this one!
